What Is a Yoke Connection?

A Yoke connection โ€” also called an A-clamp or International fitting โ€” has been the standard in recreational diving almost since the aqualung was invented. The cylinder valve holds a round rubber O-ring around the air outlet. A metal brace fits over the top of the valve and the regulator first stage seats against the O-ring. An A-clamp shaped yoke is then tightened to secure the seal.

Yoke connections are still the default fitting at most dive centres in the United States and the Caribbean. If you plan to dive primarily in those regions, Yoke kit is straightforward and widely compatible.

What Is a DIN Connection?

A DIN connection works differently. The regulator first stage screws directly into a threaded opening on the cylinder valve. The O-ring sits inside the regulator itself rather than on the tank. This creates a fully enclosed seal that is mechanically stronger than a clamped connection.

DIN has become the default system across Europe and at most dive destinations that European divers visit, including technical diving sites worldwide.

The Case for DIN

DIN creates a stronger, more reliable connection. Because the O-ring sits inside the regulator body, it is protected from knocks and drops. The threaded seal is less likely to allow air to escape than a clamped connection.

On dive trips where the local operator uses cheap Yoke inserts on their tanks, getting a good seal can be a persistent problem. Changing O-rings or swapping through several inserts to find one that seals properly wastes time at the start of a dive. With DIN, that problem does not arise.

DIN regulators also tend to be lighter and less bulky than their Yoke equivalents โ€” a real consideration when airlines enforce strict baggage allowances.

From experience

On trips abroad where the dive company uses cheap inserts to the tanks for Yoke regulators, they can prove very difficult to seal. This often means changing the O-rings or replacing the insert until you find one capable of creating a proper seal. With DIN, that problem does not arise.

Having been a diver of over 20 years, converting old regulators from A-clamp to DIN and purchasing the optional A-clamp adapter is the configuration we recommend โ€” unless you plan to dive predominantly at American resorts.

The Case for Yoke

Yoke has one meaningful advantage: the cylinder valve is more forgiving if the tank is dropped. A dropped tank that dents a DIN thread can make it difficult or impossible to attach the regulator. On a Yoke valve, the same impact might damage the exposed O-ring seat, but the O-ring itself is easy to replace.

Yoke is also the dominant fitting in the US and Caribbean. If you dive exclusively in those regions, Yoke kit avoids any compatibility issues with local hire tanks and fill stations.

Compatibility: Using DIN Regulators on Yoke Tanks

Most modern tanks can accept a threaded insert that allows Yoke regulators to attach to DIN valves. This means DIN kit is compatible with Yoke infrastructure when needed.

Going the other way is less practical. Adapters exist to fit Yoke regulators to DIN tanks, but they add significant weight and bulk to the first stage โ€” the opposite of what most divers want.

The better long-term setup is DIN regulators with a DIN-to-Yoke adapter purchased separately. You get the stronger primary connection for everyday diving, plus the flexibility to attach to Yoke tanks when you travel to the US or Caribbean.

Which Should You Choose?

Our recommendation

For most divers โ€” especially those based in or visiting Europe โ€” DIN is the better choice. The connection is stronger, the kit is lighter, and compatibility with Yoke tanks is easily solved with a small adapter.

If you already own Yoke regulators, converting them to DIN is straightforward. Most first stages can be professionally converted, and buying the optional A-clamp adapter gives you full flexibility without the weight penalty of running Yoke as your primary fitting.

Yoke remains the right choice only if you dive almost exclusively at American resorts and have no plans to dive in Europe or at technical diving destinations.
