Jacket BCD or backplate and wing?

This is the real decision on this page, and it is not a question of one being more advanced than the other. It is about where you want the bulk, how much you want to adjust, and how you like to sit in the water.

Jacket-style

The style most divers learn in. Buoyancy wraps around you, everything is in one unit, and it is quick to get into and easy to hand over on a busy boat. The Aqualung Pro HD and Axiom are the ones we sell most, both with women's-specific versions, alongside the Aqualung Rogue, the Apeks Exotec and Exotec-S, and the TUSA Liberator and SOVERIN-Alpha.

Backplate and wing

A plate and harness carrying a separate buoyancy cell behind you. It keeps the clutter off your chest, tends to hold you flatter, and because the parts are separate you replace a component rather than the whole unit. We stock XDEEP (Zeos, Ghost, Stealth 2.0 and NX Zen), Halcyon (Eclipse, Evolve and Infinity), the Apeks WTX, and our own AGIR Blackbird sets. Wings are no longer a technical-only choice, and several of these are built specifically for single-cylinder recreational diving.

Getting the fit right

Size on your torso, not your clothing size, and always check it over the exposure suit you actually dive in. A 7mm wetsuit or a drysuit changes the fit noticeably, and a BCD that fits beautifully in a shop t-shirt can ride up over a drysuit. A correctly sized unit should stay put when you lift it by the shoulders with weight in it. Women's-specific cuts exist because the shoulder and chest shaping is different, not because they are smaller, which is why we stock the Pro HD and Axiom in both.

Weight integration and trim

Most modern jacket BCDs carry your weight in integrated pockets rather than on a belt, which is more comfortable and keeps the weight where it helps your trim. Wing systems handle this differently, using plate weight and dedicated pockets such as the Halcyon ACB weight system. If you are consistently fighting to stay horizontal, the problem is usually where your weight sits rather than how much of it you are carrying, and that is worth a conversation before you buy anything.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a jacket BCD and a backplate and wing?

A jacket BCD wraps the buoyancy around you and is the style most people learn in: simple, familiar and quick to get in and out of. A backplate and wing separates the parts, a plate and harness carrying a separate buoyancy cell behind you, which keeps the bulk off your chest and tends to hold you flatter in the water. Wings are modular, so you replace one component rather than the whole unit. Jackets are easier to live with; wings are easier to fine-tune.

Do I need a women's specific BCD?

Not necessarily, but it is worth trying one. Women's models are cut differently through the shoulders and chest and the harness is shaped to sit properly rather than being a smaller version of the men's. We stock the Aqualung Pro HD Women and Axiom Women for exactly this reason. Plenty of women dive unisex BCDs and backplate systems perfectly happily, particularly wings, where the harness is adjustable anyway. Fit is personal, so come and try both.

Can I use a backplate and wing for ordinary recreational diving?

Yes, and a lot of divers do. The idea that wings are only for technical diving is out of date. Systems like the XDEEP Zeos and Stealth 2.0 REC and the Halcyon Eclipse are built for single-cylinder recreational diving, and many divers prefer the trim and the modularity. The trade-off is that a wing takes a little more setting up at first, and a jacket is quicker to hand to someone else on a boat.

How do I get the size right?
