Choosing a Drysuit Undersuit

Dive UK water in a drysuit and the undersuit does most of the work. The suit keeps water out; the undersuit is what actually keeps you warm, and it is the part divers most often get wrong. This guide covers what we stock, how the layers fit together, and how to choose between a one-piece and separates.

How the layers work

A drysuit system is usually three parts: a base layer against the skin to move moisture away, an undersuit for insulation, and the drysuit itself as the shell. How much insulation you need depends on water temperature, how long you are in, and how much you move about. Cold UK diving in winter asks considerably more of the system than a summer quarry dive.

Getting the fit right matters as much as the rating. An undersuit that is too bulky compresses inside the suit and loses loft, and it can make a drysuit uncomfortably tight through the shoulders.

Fourth Element

The Arctic is the range we sell most of. It uses a two-layer construction with high-density fabrics, giving thermal protection while wicking moisture away from perspiration and from minor suit leaks. It can be worn on its own under a neoprene drysuit, or as part of a layering system with base layers under a trilaminate suit. It comes as a one-piece, or as separate top and leggings, in men's and women's fits.

Santi

Santi undersuits are a common choice among technical divers. We stock the BZ420X, the Flex 190 and the Kango, each with a Ladies First cut designed for women rather than resized from a men's pattern.

Santi also make the heated options in our range: the Flex 2.0 heated undersuit and the Flex 2.0 heated vest. For long decompression stops in cold water, where you are stationary and generating no heat of your own, active heating does something passive insulation cannot. One piece or separates?

A one-piece is simpler, has no gap at the waist and is quicker to get into. Separates give you more range: a lighter top in summer, both layers in winter, and the option to replace one piece rather than the whole thing. If you dive across a wide range of temperatures, separates usually earn their keep. If you dive cold all year, a one-piece is hard to beat.
