Oyster Diving's workshop services the kit you already own. Book a Regulator Service, a Standard BCD Service, Cylinder Inspection and Service, a Dive Computer or Transmitter Service, or a Tank Fills Service — all carried out in house at Hove by technicians who dive. Every regulator and cylinder is tested under pressure before it goes back to you, and you are told about any replacement parts before they are fitted.

What the Hove workshop covers

Five services run out of the workshop, and between them they cover the parts of a dive kit that carry life-support duty. Each is booked on its own, so you only pay for the work you actually need doing.

Regulators

A regulator service works through the first and second stages, the mouthpiece, the hoses and the O-rings. Every part is inspected, cleaned and tested; anything worn or damaged is replaced; and the regulator is then tested under pressure before it is signed off, so airflow is verified rather than assumed. A priority option is available when the diary allows, at an additional charge.

BCDs

The Standard BCD Service is a thorough inspection, a clean and a set of functional checks on the buoyancy device — the kit you depend on to hold a stop and to stay comfortable on the surface. A priority option is available here too, again at an additional charge.

Cylinders and tank fills

Cylinder work splits four ways. A visual inspection examines the exterior, the valve and the threads for anything that would compromise safety or performance. Hydrostatic testing puts the cylinder under pressure to confirm it can still take diving conditions. O2 cleaning removes contaminants from cylinders used with enriched air or oxygen. Valves are serviced or replaced where they need it. Air fills are a separate booking under the Tank Fills Service.

Dive computers and transmitters

Battery replacement by our technicians, plus pressure testing, so the unit keeps giving you readings you can trust. Some older computers are not opened in the workshop at all — they go back to their manufacturer instead, and we handle the shipping.

Why manufacturer service intervals matter

Life-support kit tends to fail quietly rather than dramatically. An O-ring hardens, a seat wears, breathing effort creeps up across a season and you adapt to it without ever noticing you have. The same goes for an inflator that has started to stick and a cylinder valve that has started to weep. None of it announces itself, which is exactly why it is worth putting on a schedule instead of waiting for a symptom.

Manufacturers set a service interval for each model. Use theirs rather than a general rule of thumb, because it differs between makes and it is set against that specific kit. Outside the schedule, book a service after a hard knock, after a long spell out of the water, or as soon as breathing effort, free-flow or inflator behaviour changes. Regular maintenance extends the life of the equipment as well as protecting you on the dive.

Two things are worth knowing before you book. Replacement parts are always raised with you before they are fitted, on regulators, BCDs, cylinders and computers alike, so nothing is done to your equipment without your say-so. And how quickly work comes back depends on parts availability and on how busy the workshop is, so tell us when you book if you have a trip already in the diary.

Older computers are sent directly to their manufacturer rather than opened here, and we handle the shipping. As with the rest of the workshop, if replacement components are needed you will be told about the additional charge before we go ahead.
