Waterproof G50 5mm gloves
The G50 is the 5mm glove we sell most of, and the reason is simple: it is warm enough for UK sea diving from late spring to autumn, it fits properly thanks to pre-bent fingers, and it costs sensible money. If you are moving on from rental gloves or a thin tropical pair, this is the glove to start with.
Waterproof builds it from soft super-stretch neoprene with glued and blind-stitched seams, so water does not pour through the stitching the way it does on a flatlock glove. The palm carries an anti-slip print that grips a shot line and survives wreck steel.
It sits in the middle of our diving gloves range: warmer than a 3mm, more dexterous than a mitten, and the right answer for most divers most of the year.

Glove or mitten?
If you use a camera, reel or torch with a small switch, you want five fingers and this glove. If your hands go numb on every dive regardless, look at the G2 mittens instead. Most UK divers end up owning one of each.
Why divers choose the G50
Warm enough for most UK diving
5mm with sealed seams is the sweet spot for UK sea temperatures outside the depths of winter. Thinner gloves leave you cold by 30 minutes; thicker ones cost dexterity you will miss on every clip and buckle.
The fingers are the right shape
Pre-bent fingers mean the glove rests in a relaxed grip instead of flat. You are not fighting the neoprene every time you close your hand, which matters over a long dive and keeps blood flowing to your fingertips.
Seams that keep water out
Glued and blind-stitched construction means the needle never passes all the way through the neoprene. It is a more expensive way to build a glove and it is why the G50 is warmer than flatlock gloves of the same thickness.
Grip you can rely on
The anti-slip palm holds a wet line, a ladder rung and a reel handle. It also takes the abrasion of shore entries and wreck diving that wears plain neoprene through in a season.
Features that matter underwater
5mm super-stretch neoprene
Soft and elastic, so a snug size goes on without a struggle and the glove moves with your hand rather than against it.
Glued and blind-stitched seams
Glued first, then stitched only part-way through the material. No stitch holes through to the inside, so far less water exchange than a flatlock glove.
Pre-bent fingers
Cut and shaped in a natural curl. Less fatigue, better grip, warmer fingertips.
Anti-slip palm
A textured grip surface across the palm and fingers. Essential on a shot line in current and on a boat ladder in a swell.
Not a winter glove
The G50 is a wet glove with an open cuff. In UK water below about 10 degrees, or on long dives in cold quarries, your hands will get cold in any 5mm glove. For winter look at the G2 Polar mittens or, on a drysuit, a dry glove system.

Who it may not be for: divers who run cold and dive UK water year-round. A mitten or dry gloves will serve you better in winter. For tropical diving a 2.5mm or 3mm glove is plenty and far less bulky.
Sizing and fit
The G50 runs from Extra Small to Double Extra Large. It should be snug across the palm with fingertips reaching the end of each finger. Space at the fingertips fills with cold water and is the most common reason gloves feel colder than they should.

Care and use
A 5mm glove lasts several seasons if the neoprene is looked after.
- Rinse in fresh water after every dive, inside and out
- Dry out of direct sun; turn them inside out to dry the lining
- Store flat or hanging, not crushed in a kit bag, to keep the pre-bent shape
- Put gloves on last, over your suit cuff, to reduce flushing at the wrist
- Glue small cuts early; a nick at a fingertip will run along the seam if left

Frequently asked questions
Are the Waterproof G50 5mm gloves warm enough for UK diving?
From late spring to autumn, yes, for most divers. In winter, or on long cold quarry dives, a 5mm open-cuff glove will not be enough and you want a Polar mitten or dry gloves.
What is the difference between the G50 and a flatlock 5mm glove?
The seams. The G50 is glued and blind-stitched, so the stitching does not pass through to the inside and far less water flushes through. Flatlock gloves are cheaper and colder at the same thickness.
Can I use a camera in the G50 gloves?
Yes. Five independent fingers with a pre-bent shape give good dexterity for housing controls, reels and torch switches. That is the main reason to choose a glove over a mitten.
What size G50 should I order?
Measure your palm circumference without the thumb and use Waterproof's chart. If you are between sizes, go down. A glove with space at the fingertips is a cold glove.
Do the G50 gloves have a wrist seal?
No. They have a standard neoprene cuff that you wear over or under your suit cuff. For a sealed wrist look at the G2 mittens with their GlideSkin seals.
