Wetsuit buying guide
Start with the water you actually dive
Most divers end up with two suits rather than one that half-works everywhere, so decide which water you are buying for first. Holidays and warm water point you at a shortie or a 2-3mm. Summer UK and the Mediterranean point at a 5mm full suit. UK diving through the year points at 7-8mm or a semi-dry, and you should budget for a hood, boots and gloves at the same time, because that is where the heat goes. Freedivers want a two-piece with a hooded jacket rather than a scuba cut. Once you have the band, use the thickness, brand and gender filters on this page to compare like with like, and talk to us if you are on the line between two sizes.

Frequently asked questions
Which wetsuit brands does Oyster Diving stock?
Eight: Fourth Element, Apeks, Aqualung, Bare, Beuchat, Waterproof, TUSA and Sharkskin. Fourth Element and Waterproof carry the widest ladders, from thin layering pieces up to semi-dry suits. Beuchat is where almost all the freediving and spearfishing suits sit. Apeks concentrates on the ThermiQ semi-dry and the Thermiq 5mm. Bare covers Velocity Ultra, Revel, Evoke, Elate, Nixie and Reactive. Aqualung runs AquaFlex, HydroFlex, Dynaflex, Solaflex and the Wave Junior suits. TUSA and Sharkskin cover the entry-level shorty and the layering top. Use the brand filter on this page to see any one of them on its own.
What thickness wetsuit do I need?
Work backwards from where you dive most. Warm-water trips and holidays: a shortie or a 2-3mm full suit, such as the TUSA SPORT shorties, the Aqualung HydroFlex 3mm Shorty or the Fourth Element Xenos 3mm. Summer UK and the Mediterranean: a 5mm full suit like the Fourth Element Proteus II 5mm, the Bare Velocity Ultra 5mm or the Aqualung AquaFlex 5mm. UK water year round: step up to 7-8mm or to a semi-dry such as the Apeks ThermiQ 8/7mm, the Waterproof SD Neoflex or the Beuchat Semi-dry X-Trem. A semi-dry does not keep you dry; it slows the water moving through the suit, which is the part that chills you. Thickness is one of the filters on this page, so you can narrow to a band first and compare brands within it.
Where are the women's and men's wetsuits?
They are all here. We keep wetsuits in one collection and treat gender as a filter rather than splitting the range across separate pages, so you can hold a thickness or a brand steady and see every cut of it side by side. The filter offers women's, men's and unisex. Most models run in both cuts anyway, including the Fourth Element Xenos, Proteus II and Thermocline, the Aqualung AquaFlex, the Beuchat Semi-dry X-Trem and ZENTO, and the Waterproof W7, W8 and SD Neoflex. Women's-specific patterns such as the Bare Nixie, Bare Elate and Aqualung Dynaflex appear under the women's filter.
How should a wetsuit fit, and how do I care for it?
Snug everywhere, painful nowhere. A wetsuit works by holding a thin layer of water against you and letting your body warm it, so the gaps are what make you cold: neck, wrists, ankles and the small of the back. If you can pinch a fold of neoprene away from your chest, or there is a pocket of slack behind your knees, the suit is too big. If you cannot lift your arms above your head or turn your neck, it is too small. For care, rinse inside and out in fresh water after every dive and dry on a wide hanger out of direct sunlight. Neoprene is killed by folding and by UV, not by diving. Keep the zip waxed. If you are between sizes or between thicknesses, call the shop before you order.
Do you stock freediving and spearfishing wetsuits?
Yes, and it is one of the deepest parts of this collection. Beuchat supplies most of it: Espadon, Espadon Prestige and Espadon Elite, plus Redrock, Bifo, Rocksea Trigocamo Wide and the women's Athena. These are listed as separate pieces, a hooded jacket and a long john, because that is how two-piece freediving suits are sold and sized. Fourth Element covers the same ground with the RF1 one-piece and the RF2 hooded jacket, leggings and vest, in men's and women's cuts. Filter by brand to see either range on its own.
