XDEEP NX Zen wing system

The NX Zen is the wing we put most divers on when they move off a jacket BCD and onto a backplate. It is not the most aggressive technical setup XDEEP makes, and that is the point. It gives you proper trim, a clean profile, and 19kg of lift on a single cylinder without asking you to reconfigure your whole approach to diving.

Nineteen kilos matters more than it sounds. Most single cylinder wings sit around 17kg, which is fine in a 5mm suit and marginal once you add a drysuit, a steel 12, and a bit of kit. The Zen gives you headroom without ballooning into a doughnut that drags.

It is a system rather than a bladder, so you are choosing harness size, backplate material, and colour together. That is worth getting right first time, and it is the part people most often ask us about before ordering.

Why divers choose the NX Zen

It fixes trim without you having to think about it

A jacket BCD holds air around your waist and pushes you upright. A back-mounted wing holds it behind you, which puts you flat by default. Most divers notice the difference on the first dive. Air consumption follows, because you stop finning against your own body position for the whole dive.

The narrow profile is a genuine safety feature, not a styling choice

Wide wings catch things. On a wreck penetration or in a kelp bed, a bladder that sits close to the plate gives you far less to snag. It also means less water resistance to push through, which is where the gas efficiency claim actually comes from.

The inflator position solves the classic wing problem

The usual complaint about back-mounted wings is dumping air while flat. The Zen repositions the inflator and the corrugated hose so the dump sits where your hand naturally goes when you are horizontal. It takes one dive to stop reaching for where a jacket inflator used to be.

It grows with you

The plate and harness you buy today take a twinset adapter, stage rigging, and a bigger bladder later. Divers heading towards technical diving kit generally keep the harness and change the wing, which makes this a cheaper long-term purchase than a second BCD in three years.

19kg lift on a single cylinder

Enough to float a steel 12 and a drysuit diver at the surface with a comfortable margin, and not so much that the bladder folds into a taco when it is half empty. This is the sweet spot for UK single cylinder diving, which is exactly what we sell it for. Every wing in our single cylinder wings range is chosen on that same lift-to-profile logic.

Extended anchor points

The longer anchor points let the wing sit properly against the plate whatever cylinder you run. Short anchors are why some wings ride up and squeeze the bladder against the tank band, which is a slow way to wear a hole in it.

Ergonomic backplate shape

The plate is contoured rather than flat. On a bare harness over a drysuit that is the difference between a comfortable hour and a bruised spine, particularly for smaller divers who otherwise get the top edge of a flat plate against their shoulder blades.

Deluxe harness option

A one-piece webbing harness is the technical standard and the cheapest to maintain, but it goes on over your head and does not adjust once set. The deluxe adds quick-release clips and shoulder padding. If you dive dry in winter and want the rig off fast at the end, or you have any shoulder mobility issue, the deluxe is worth the difference.

Where the NX Zen sits against the alternatives

Against XDEEP's own Zen Ultralight, this is the heavier, more durable option. The Ultralight is built for travel and packs smaller. The NX Zen is what you want if the wing lives in a car boot and gets dragged over shingle every other weekend.

Against a Halcyon Eclipse or an Apeks WTX, the Zen is competitive on price and lighter on the plate. Halcyon has the longer track record in cave diving. Apeks has the easier route into a full technical rig through their own accessory range. All three are sound, and honestly the harness fit matters more than the badge.

Against staying on a jacket BCD, the question is what you dive. If you do two warm water holidays a year, a jacket is fine and cheaper. If you dive UK water regularly, in a drysuit, and you care about trim, the move to a backplate is the single biggest improvement most divers make to their configuration.

Who it may not be for: if you are diving twinsets now, go straight to a twinset wing rather than buying this and replacing it. If you only dive on holiday twice a year, the weight and the setup effort are probably not worth it over a decent travel BCD.

Setting it up properly

Most of the value in a backplate and wing comes from the first hour of setup. Rushing it is why people bounce off the format.

• Thread and cut the harness wearing your drysuit and undersuit. A harness set over summer kit will be unwearable in January.
• Set the crotch strap tight enough that the plate cannot ride up. Loose crotch straps are why wings creep towards your ears on ascent.
• Position the D-rings where your hands actually go, not where they look tidy on the bench. Chest D-rings sit at collarbone height for most people.
• Run the corrugated hose so the dump is reachable with your left hand while flat, then test it in a pool before you test it on a wreck.
• Rinse and dry the bladder inside as well as out if it has taken water. Salt left in a wing is what eventually kills it.

Buying the NX Zen

This is the wing our own instructors point people at when they ask what to buy after their first fifty dives. It is not the cheapest route into a backplate, and it is not the most specialised. It is the one that fits the widest range of divers and keeps working as they progress.

The choices that matter are backplate material, harness type, and plate size. Get those three right and the rig will last a decade. Get them wrong and it will be uncomfortable from the first dive, which is why we would rather talk it through before you order than process a return afterwards.
