Waterproof G2 7mm Mittens
Waterproof G2 7mm Polar mittens
This is the mitten for the dives where a 5mm glove has already failed you. Waterproof developed the Polar series from cold-water expedition work, and the defining feature is a double GlideSkin seal at the wrist that brings it close to semi-dry: water gets in once, warms up, and mostly stays put. Combined with a three-finger mitten shape that keeps fingers together, it is the warmest wet handwear we stock.
We point winter UK divers at it, along with anyone diving Scottish sea lochs, inland quarries from November to April, or Norway and Iceland in a wetsuit or semi-dry. It is also the mitten drysuit divers buy when they are not ready for dry gloves but have had enough of aborting dives with numb hands.
The rest of the G2 design carries over: long YKK zip, Glove-Grip tab, 3D pre-bent shape and a polyurethane palm. Against the other cold-water gloves and mittens we sell, the double seal is what sets it apart.

Semi-dry, not dry
The double seal cuts water exchange dramatically but your hands will still be damp. For completely dry hands you need a dry glove ring system on a drysuit. For everyone else, this is as warm as wet handwear gets.
Why divers choose the G2 Polar mitten
Heat loss at the wrist is the problem, and this fixes most of it
On a standard glove, every hand movement pumps cold water in at the cuff. The Polar mitten's two GlideSkin seals work together so that the water that gets in on entry stays in and warms. That is the difference between hands that are cold at 20 minutes and hands that are fine at 50.
Fingers together, fingers warm
The two-finger pocket lets your middle, ring and little fingers share heat. Thumb and index finger stay independent for your inflator, clips and mask. On a cold dive that trade is worth making.
You can actually get it on
Thick mittens with a tight seal are usually a two-person job. The extra-long YKK zip opens the cuff wide, GlideSkin lets the hand slide through, and the Glove-Grip loop gives your already-mittened hand something to pull. Waterproof has clearly designed this on a cold boat deck.
Built for expedition use
Bonded nylon thread, a PU-armoured palm, a reflective logo for low light and an ID plate. These were designed for polar work and they are over-built for a UK winter, which is exactly what you want.
Features that matter underwater
Double GlideSkin seal
Two smooth-skin seals in series at the wrist. The outer sits over your suit cuff or seal, the inner sits against your skin or undersuit. Together they give near semi-dry performance in a wet mitten.
Limestone neoprene
Higher closed-cell density than petroleum neoprene, so it insulates better and compresses less at depth. It also holds its shape longer, which keeps the seal working season after season.
Extra-long YKK zip and Glove-Grip
The zip runs high up the cuff for a wide opening. The Glove-Grip tab is the loop you hook with the other mitten to pull the cuff over your suit seal when you have no free fingers.
3D pre-bent shape
The mitten rests slightly curled, which is where your hand wants to be. A flat mitten fights you, tires your forearm and restricts the blood flow that keeps fingers warm.
Polyurethane palm
Non-slip PU print across the palm and pads. It grips a frozen shot line and a ladder and shrugs off wreck steel and quarry rock.
Pair it with the right suit seal
The double seal does its best work over a semi-dry wrist seal or a drysuit cuff. Over a thin wetsuit cuff you lose some of the benefit, though it will still be far warmer than a standard glove. If you dive a drysuit year-round in the UK, ask us about dry gloves as well; for some divers that is the better answer.
Who the G2 Polar mitten is for
- UK divers who keep diving through winter in a semi-dry or drysuit
- Divers heading to Scotland, Norway, Iceland or cold-water quarries
- Drysuit divers not yet ready for a dry glove system
- Anyone whose hands are the first thing to go cold on every dive
- Divers doing long, slow dives where hands are not generating heat
Who it may not be for: photographers and anyone running reels or line regularly, because you lose three independent fingers. For summer UK diving the G2 5mm mitten is warm enough and less bulky, and for tropical water any of this is overkill.
Sizing and fit
The Polar mitten runs from Extra Small to Double Extra Large. It needs to be snug: fingertips reaching the end of the pockets, palm close, and the seals lying flat against your wrist with no folds. Loose mittens fill with water and the double seal cannot do its job.
Measure around your palm at the widest point without the thumb, use Waterproof's glove chart, and if you sit between sizes go down. The zip makes a close size easy to get on and the neoprene relaxes slightly with use.

Care and use
The seals and the zip are the parts that matter, and both last for years with basic care.
- Rinse in fresh water after every dive and run the zip under the tap to clear salt and grit
- Check both GlideSkin seals for debris before each dive; a grain of sand under a seal lets water through
- Dry open, out of direct sun, and store flat or hung with the zips relaxed
- Lubricate the YKK zip every few dives
- Put mittens on last and use the Glove-Grip to seat the cuff over your suit seal
Still cold?
If your hands are cold in these, the answer is dry gloves on a drysuit. We fit ring systems in store and will tell you honestly which route suits your diving.
Frequently asked questions
Are the Waterproof G2 Polar mittens dry?
No. They are semi-dry wet mittens. The double GlideSkin seal cuts water exchange to a minimum, so the water that gets in warms up and stays, but your hands will be damp. Fully dry hands need a dry glove system.
How much warmer are the G2 Polar mittens than the G2 5mm mittens?
Enough to matter in winter. The second seal is the main difference: it stops the flushing that drains heat at the wrist. If you are diving UK water between November and April, take the Polar.
Can I use my inflator and clips in the G2 Polar mittens?
Yes. Thumb and index finger are independent, so inflator buttons, bolt snaps and mask straps all work. Camera controls and fine reel work are harder than in a five-finger glove.
Do the G2 Polar mittens work with a drysuit?
Yes, and very well. The outer seal sits over the drysuit wrist seal and the inner seal against your skin or undersuit. Many of our drysuit customers use these instead of dry gloves.
What size Waterproof G2 Polar mitten should I order?
Measure your palm circumference without the thumb and use Waterproof's chart. Go down a size if you are between two; a loose mitten fills with water and defeats the seals.
Why is the G2 Polar mitten made from limestone neoprene?
Limestone-derived neoprene has a higher closed-cell density than petroleum neoprene. It insulates better for the thickness, compresses less at depth and holds its shape longer, which keeps the seals working.
For milder water the G2 5mm mitten uses the same design with a single seal, and Waterproof's H1 hoods in our Waterproof cold-water range are the natural partner for a winter set.
