Frequently asked questions
Which dive bag brands does Oyster Diving stock?
Aqualung, Apeks, Stahlsac, TUSA, Fourth Element, Waterproof, Ocean Pack and Seahorse. Stahlsac is the deepest part of the range, covering mesh backpacks, cargo packs, duffels and wheeled travel bags. Seahorse covers the hard protective cases. Everything listed on this page is what we currently hold.
Do I need a mesh bag or a dry bag?
They do opposite jobs. A mesh bag drains, so wet fins and a rinsed wetsuit keep dripping instead of stewing — that is what you want on a boat or walking back from the shore. A dry bag keeps water out, which is what you want for a phone, a camera, dry clothes or a drysuit on a wet crossing. Plenty of divers carry both: a mesh backpack such as the Stahlsac B.V.I Mesh Backpack for kit, and something like the Ocean Pack Waterproof Dry Bag for everything that must stay dry.
What does a wet/dry dive bag actually give you?
A sealed, water-resistant lower compartment that keeps damp gear away from dry clothing in the same bag, with a breathable upper section so anything still damp can air out. The Stahlsac Steel Wheeled Bags are built this way. It matters most on multi-day trips, when you are repacking a still-wet wetsuit next to the clothes you have to wear to dinner. Empty and dry that compartment as soon as you get home rather than leaving it shut.
Do I need a separate regulator bag?
If your regulator travels loose in a duffel under weight belts and fins, yes. A dedicated bag such as the Aqualung Explorer Regulator II Bag uses foam with stiffened board walls and a round shape that stops hoses kinking, and it packs flat when it is empty so it costs you nothing in luggage space on the way out. The Stahlsac Molokini Regulator Bag does the same job. Both then drop inside a larger travel bag.
When is a hard case worth it over a padded bag?
When the contents cannot survive being crushed or soaked — camera housings, strobes, ports, dive computers, delicate spares. The Seahorse Protective Equipment Cases are watertight, airtight, dustproof and crush resistant, with an O-ring seal and an automatic pressure purge valve so the case equalises after a flight instead of jamming shut. They take standard padlocks and several ship with cubed protective foam you can pluck to shape. For clothing, wetsuits and fins a soft bag is lighter and packs better.
