Choosing scuba diving equipment

The right scuba kit depends on where you dive, how often, and how far you want to take it. Cold UK waters ask more of your equipment than a holiday reef, so it pays to choose gear rated for the conditions you actually dive in.

Equipment for new divers

Start with the personal basics: a well-fitting mask, snorkel, boots and fins. These are the items where fit matters most and where rental kit lets you down first. As you log more dives, add your own regulator, BCD and dive computer so your setup stays consistent and familiar.

Choosing the right size and fit

Wetsuits, drysuits, BCDs and boots all size differently between brands. Use our size guide as a starting point, and if you are between sizes, get in touch. We fit divers in our centres every week and can tell you honestly which way to go.

Which brands do Oyster Diving stock?

We stock brands our instructors trust with their own diving, including Apeks, Aqualung, Fourth Element, Shearwater, Suunto, Garmin, TUSA, Beuchat and Santi. If you want a recommendation for a specific type of diving, ask. We will point you to the right tool rather than the most expensive one.

Servicing and aftercare

Regulators and BCDs need periodic servicing to stay safe, and our qualified technicians can look after that for you. Rinse your kit in fresh water after every dive, dry it out of the sun and store it loosely packed, and it will last for years.

Frequently asked questions

What equipment does a beginner scuba diver need?

Most new divers start with their own mask, snorkel, fins and boots, because personal fit and comfort matter most. Regulators, BCDs and dive computers can be rented while you learn, then bought once you know how and where you like to dive. If you are unsure, the Oyster Diving team can help you choose kit that matches your diving plans and budget.

What thickness wetsuit do I need for UK diving?

For most UK sea diving in summer you will want at least a 5mm wetsuit, and many divers prefer a 7mm semi-dry with a hood, gloves and boots. For year-round UK diving a drysuit is the most comfortable option. If you mainly dive abroad in warm water, a 3mm suit is usually enough.

How do I choose the right size?

Each product page lists the sizes available, and our size guide covers the main brands we stock. If you are between sizes or unsure about fit, contact the team before you order and we will help you get it right first time.

Do you service regulators and other dive equipment?

Yes. Oyster Diving offer equipment servicing carried out by qualified technicians, including regulators and BCDs. Regular servicing keeps your kit safe and reliable, and most manufacturers recommend a service every year or to their published schedule.
