Christmas gift questions, answered
What do you buy a scuba diver for Christmas?
Start with what they use on every dive and rarely buy for themselves: anti-fog, a surface marker buoy with a spool, a changing mat or donning socks. For a bigger gift, a dive computer such as the Aqualung i330R suits newer divers and the Shearwater Teric suits anyone up to technical level. If you do not know what they already own, a gift voucher is the safe choice, or tell us their level and where they dive and we will point you at what makes sense.
Can they try the gift in a pool before using it on a real dive?
Yes. Spend over £100 on this page and the diver gets a free place at one of our regular pool sessions, at any of our six locations: Brighton, Soho in central London, South East London and Kent, North London with Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, Surrey and Berkshire, or Oxfordshire. They set the kit up and get used to it in the water before their first proper dive. Our instructors and divemasters run the session and will happily help with set-up and the odd question, but it is not one-to-one coaching, so they dive it themselves. Book it with us after Christmas and bring the kit along. Kit that has been in the water counts as used and cannot be returned, so the session is for getting confident with it, not for deciding whether to keep it.
What if I buy the wrong size?
Unused kit in its original packaging can come back within 30 days. Once it has been worn in the water it counts as used and cannot be returned. Hoods, gloves, socks and undersuits are the usual culprits, so check the label in their kit bag or ask us for the brand's size chart before you order. A gift voucher avoids the problem altogether.
When is the last order date for Christmas delivery?
For anything shown as in stock, order by 2pm on Friday 18 December for delivery before Christmas. UK delivery is free on orders of £50 or more. Sizes and colours marked Available to order come from the supplier and may not arrive in time, so contact us before ordering if it is a close one. Gift vouchers are emailed the same day, so they work right up to Christmas Eve.
Is a dive computer a good gift for a new diver?
Yes, and it is one of the few big gifts that is hard to get wrong. The Aqualung i330R is our pick for a first computer. Avoid buying a transmitter or tank pressure sender as a standalone gift, because it only works with a compatible computer they already own.
Do gift vouchers work for courses and servicing too?
Yes. Oyster Diving gift vouchers from £25 to £500 can be spent on kit, PADI courses and equipment servicing, in our Hove shop or online, and they arrive by email.
